Abstract: Historically originating in Roman law, alienation has been explored extensively in philosophy and theology. In the 19th century, Marx showed that workers’ alienation was a consequence of capitalism. Others conceptualized alienation as socially induced psychological states,  which could be scaled and measured. Continuing both the structural and the psychosocial traditions, researchers now study alienation in relation to uses of digital technologies and new forms of exploitation in work, politics and popular culture.
